Last night was spent watching the progress of Hurricane Earl as it passed Buxton NC and Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter on cable. It looks like Buxton got some water and Clint got the bad guys. Today the Squirrel played high plains drifter as we left the campground at 7,000' and climbed to 10,350'+ on a 75 mile circuitous route. This road, with it's 8% grades, made the Squirrel rev his engine. The Moose was happy to stay home and rest. Passing through the lower grass prairie, cypress tree and winterfat shrub covered hillsides, then bristlecone pine and aspen, followed by Cedar Breaks National Monument and the southern Utah high plains and alpine meadows. Not a bad day but pretty laid back. Once the afternoon heat drops to 80F we will take a Red Canyon hike.
